Hello! Before we get started, why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Mayowa Oludoyi, I’m a Data scientist/business intelligence analyst. I’m a self taught Python programmer with a core interest in machine learning, deep learning and artificial intelligence. I’m currently working to build Business Intelligence dashboards using Microsoft Power BI for one of the biggest financial institutions here in Nigeria .
Over the years, you must have worked on several different exciting projects and have collected a lot of experience. How did you get started? How did you get your first job?
I have a background in Mechanical Engineering. Immediately I made a switch to learning Python programming language due to my love for computing and when it was time to apply my skill set as a python programmer, I chose data science track.
What would you say is your biggest success so far?
My biggest success so far is how I was able to make a switch to a completely new discipline over a short period of time without a major set back. I mean I became so relevant in the data science space in less than a year.
What is your perfect mentee like?
My perfect mentee will definitely be like me. I’m also a mentee to many in the industry and I have been able to attain this height through diligence, hard work and practical application of things learnt over the years.
What advice can you give to young people entering the industry?
Pick a skill one at a time and become proficient in it, then unto the next. Importantly, always learn by project. Apply whatsoever you have learnt immediately in a project of your choice. Own your pace and make sure you are progressing.
